Welcome to Lou McVie Counselling & Psychotherapy
I’m Lou McVie, a fully qualified psychotherapist based in Dumfries. Since qualifying many years ago, I’ve had the privilege of supporting clients from over 22 countries around the world. My original training is rooted in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and I also hold a diploma in the Psychology of Eating. Over the years, I’ve taken time to study a range of other modalities, which I now integrate into my practice.
Helping clients move from chaos to calm isn’t just what I do — it’s who I am. I offer a warm, empathetic, and non-judgemental space where your story genuinely matters. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, low mood, emotional eating, low self-esteem, trauma, or life transitions, I’m here to listen and support you at your pace.

My approach blends evidence-based methods like CBT with emotional healing techniques such as parts work and mindfulness. My focus is always on helping you understand the “why” behind your thoughts and behaviours, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and reconnect with your authentic self. We won’t rush to “fix” you, instead, we’ll work together to map out a path forward that suits you, one step at a time.
In our sessions, you’ll find a safe space to be heard, to explore, to question, and to grow. As we walk that journey together, my goal is to empower you to move more confidently into a life of purpose, calm, and self-trust.
I’m a registered member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and committed to ethical practice, lifelong learning, and meaningful outcomes.
My approach is gentle, collaborative, and centred around understanding you as an individual. While my core training is in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), I integrate a range of therapeutic approach, including solution-focused work, parts work, trauma-informed practice, and mindfulness, to meet you exactly where you are. I don’t believe in quick fixes or forcing change. Instead, we work together to slow things down, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and explore the emotions, thoughts, and patterns that may be keeping you stuck.
Solution-focused work allows us to highlight your strengths, identify what’s already working, and create small, achievable steps that move you gently towards the life you want.
Combined with deeper reflective work, this approach helps you build confidence and momentum while staying grounded and supported.
My focus is always on helping you understand the “why” beneath your struggles, while also developing practical, realistic ways to move forward. We work at your pace, in a calm, compassionate, non-judgemental space where you can think clearly, feel deeply, and reflect safely.
Every step we take is personalised to what you need, one small, meaningful step at a time.
I work with people experiencing a wide variety of emotional and psychological struggles. Many of the clients who come to me feel overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or disconnected from themselves, and are looking for a safe space to slow down and make sense of what’s going on beneath the surface.

If what you’re struggling with isn’t mentioned above, you’re still very welcome to get in touch. I work with a broad range of emotional and psychological difficulties, and this list reflects just some of the areas I support.
Alongside one-to-one therapy, I also offer group therapy, providing a supportive and shared environment where clients can explore common experiences, build insight, and grow together.
Whether your challenges are long-term or more recent, therapy offers a space to pause, breathe, reflect, and begin reconnecting with who you are. We work gently and at your pace, one meaningful step at a time.
I offer both online sessions via Zoom (throughout the UK) and in-person therapy in Dumfries, allowing you to choose the format that feels most comfortable and accessible for you.
I offer one-to-one therapy (in person and online), group therapy, and I am also available for workshops and wellbeing sessions.
Sessions are typically 50 minutes and are tailored to your individual needs, pace, and goals. The number of sessions and the frequency of therapy will vary from person to person. We will discuss this during the assessment phase, and we can review it at any time throughout our work together. My aim is always to support you at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.
Before starting therapy, I offer a free initial consultation and basic assessment. This short phone call gives us a chance to talk through what you’re looking for, explore your current challenges, and ensure we feel like a good fit to work together. Our therapeutic relationship is important, and this initial conversation allows both of us to feel confident and comfortable working together.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling works, or to arrange a initial consultation. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.
You can also call me on 07851 577745 if you would prefer to leave a message or speak to me first. I am happy to discuss any queries or questions you may have prior to arranging an initial appointment.
Counselling is usually a good way to help with a current problem; something that can be discussed and - hopefully - resolved within a limited number of sessions. Over a certain number of weeks the understanding of the problem improves and away forward becomes clear. Therapy often describes work that goes a bit deeper, towards more substantial life issues and problems having a deeper effect on the client’s life. Therapy often requires a long-term approach, so the number of sessions can be open-ended.
Which option is most suitable depends on the client and the difficulties they are facing. In some cases counselling works well as an ongoing, longer-term option - or therapy can manage to resolve an issue in just a few sessions.
Everything that is said within the counselling room is private - this is one of the main ways counselling and therapy differ from talking to a friend or relative. Once you are comfortable with the format of weekly sessions and the safe space they provide, you will find the freedom to speak in confidence is of great value.
Note that there are some situations where you may be a risk to yourself or others, and there the law requires that I notify an authority; in these cases I may not be able to keep total confidentiality. Breaking confidentiality is very rare though, and only happens after the person concerned has been informed.
How long a period of counselling lasts will vary from person to person and depend on the depth of the issues they are facing. For some people a couple of sessions helps to bring their problems into focus, and they feel ready to move forward; other problems may require more of an open-ended approach.
Before we begin any work we will agree on the number of sessions we’ll undertake, and at the end of that number review our progress. As long as we both agree further therapy will be of benefit to you, sessions can continue.
My aim is to offer a first appointment - known as an initial assessment - within 1-2 weeks. Then we would arrange a set number of counselling sessions to take place at the same time every week, that is convenient for you and where I have availabity. How quickly these sessions can begin will depend on the availabity of that free ‘slot’.
